My old dog Missy is 15. I took her in today for a teeth cleaning. I told them I would like her not put under anesthesia, but just sedated like they had done two years ago. It had been my idea to do just sedation because I was desperate to get her teeth cleaned, and they agreed at that time and it turned out well. I believe I blogged about it at that time. The reason I didn't want her put under anesthesia is because several years ago a vet had put her under for a teeth cleaning and from what that vet told me, she said Missy's heart had stopped twice and they thankfully were able to revive her but were not able to do any cleaning because of her heart. It still makes me wonder about this vet because she also said Missy heart was very bad to begin with and that she would probably die in her sleep any day soon. That was maybe about 7 years ago or more. So all this time I was afraid to have Missy teeth cleaned....and they continued to rot. Her mouth smelled so bad. But after the cleaning with sedation 2 years ago, she smelled better, but needed it done again. so that brings me to today....I took her in, but things didn't work out for just sedation. The vet called me later in the day and told me that he tried to clean them with just sedation but her teeth were so rotten they started to break off with just scraping the tarter off, so he made the decision to put her under anesthesia and he ended up pulling all her teeth out. I believe he said there were 16 or 17 pulled out. he said they were all rotten except one. He pulled it also so she would not have to go through it ever again. Missy did ok through it all. The vet told me he had never seen a dog with such rotten teeth. (that didn't make me feel too good!) No, I never brushed them like some people do. I just can't do it, it gives me the dry heaves! But then again I wasn't too shocked by all this, because I remember the lady we got my dog from (we call her the dachshund lady cause she had so many) she told me her old dogs became toothless or only had a couple teeth and that they would just gum their food. So in the long run, Missy should do just fine. In fact better without all the rotten teeth infecting her. Here is a picture of her from tonight. She is already eating this evening. Karen, I bet you can relate to the pink bandage on her leg. The vet left her I.V. needle in, just in case she didn't do well, so he could get medicine in her quickly without poking her again. She seems to be doing ok tonight. so maybe can get her I.V. out tomorrow.
